WordPress.com SSO Login

Websites hosted on WordPress.com have a streamlined login process. Use your WordPress.com account credentials to log in securely with two-step authentication without needing to maintain separate usernames and passwords for all websites you manage. This guide explains how login works on your WordPress.com website.

This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Creator or Entrepreneur plan.

About WordPress.com Login

WordPress.com Login, also referred to as Secure Sign-On (SSO), connects your WordPress.com dashboard and WP Admin dashboard to use the same login information. Managed by our Jetpack plugin, it ensures you can quickly and securely access all your site’s dashboard settings without needing a separate login for WP Admin.

A website on the WordPress.com Creator or Entrepreneur plan can have two different types of authorized users:

  • WordPress.com Users: People who log in via WordPress.com to access your site after you grant them access.
  • Local Users: People who log in via yoursiteaddress.com/wp-admin after you create their user account (either manually or by a plugin.)

If you invite a WordPress.com user, a local user account will automatically be created for them when they accept the invite. However, if you create a local user, it will not automatically create a paired WordPress.com account. In most cases, WordPress.com Login is recommended to remain switched on for a seamless login flow for you and your site’s users.

Turn WordPress.com Login On or Off

Sites hosted on WordPress.com cannot deactivate the Jetpack plugin, since doing so would break your access to your site and remove the essential features it provides. Jetpack is automatically managed so we can continue to ensure your site’s ultimate security and performance.

However, you can deactivate specific Jetpack features if required. WordPress.com login is automatically enabled on WordPress.com websites.

You can deactivate and reactivate WordPress.com login with the following steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Jetpack → Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the “WordPress.com login” section.
  4. Toggle on or off the option labeled “Allow users to log in to this site using WordPress.com accounts.” With this option switched on, you can optionally toggle:
    • Match accounts using email addresses: automatically link the verified WordPress.com account to a pre-existing local account with a matching email address.
    • Require accounts to use WordPress.com Two-Step Authentication: force Two-Step Authentication when users log in to your site via WordPress.com.
